Les Confidences
Architecture competition entry for a temporary structure
THE STORY OF THE PROJECT
Once upon a time there was a little girl who could never see her reflection in the mirror. One day, tired of everybody laughing at her, she ran into the woods and got lost. She walked between the trees for hours and hours, completely disoriented. Suddenly, she happened upon what looked like a group of large, wooden houses. But they were not quite houses, as they had no windows, roof or doors. Attracted by the sensual shapes of these structures, she began walking between them. Soon she discovered that everything was repetition and that she couldn’t find her way out. This impossible labyrinth always led to a different room. Each room contained a different object. In one she found a pipe, but no tobacco to put in it. In another there was a spoon, but nothing to eat. She found a racquet, a canvas, and suddenly, a book.
The book was the story of a girl who got lost in the forest and ran for hours and hours through the woods until she arrived at a labyrinth. The girl in the labyrinth could not stop reading; she was so captivated by the resemblance of the story to what was actually happening to her. Suddenly the story stopped and what followed were only blank pages. She realized that she had to continue going through the labyrinth if she wanted the story in the book to continue. So, she got up and walked to the next spiral. She turned left and entered another room with another object. This time it was a mirror. Instinctively, she walked toward the mirror. By a miracle she could see her reflection in it. But then her reflection started making signs, motioning for her to come. It was shouting something to her, but she couldn´t hear what it was saying. Without thinking, she jumped into the mirror and passed through it, leaving the book behind. She was amazed to find herself back in her own room, away from the labyrinth. But now she could see her reflection in the mirror! She had lost and found herself in the labyrinth. From this moment on the mirror would be her door back to the labyrinth and the book, which continues to write her story.
CONSTRUCTION
This spiral made of laminar wood, packs the space for a concentration activity. It can be used for private purposes, as a room in a big space (loft), as an office or meeting room in a larger office space, or as a meditation place in the middle of the nature (garden, park…).
But, thanks to its construction system, it can be coupled, and by series of repetitions, it can configure an infinite labyrinth.
When you multiply the system you can use it for exhibition purposes, having different pieces per unit, or even ask several artists to curate each of the spaces. It can be a very sensorial installation experience but could even be served as temporary clusters.
